InfoTech: AsiaPac Led 2007 Global Messaging Mailbox Growth, Sales

Parsippany, N.J. July 8, 2008 According to the latest Telecom Intelligence Group “InfoTrack for Converged Applications” (ICA) report on messaging, the 2007 global voice mail/unified messaging mailbox market grew 6.5 percent year over year, led by the Asia Pacific region.

The newly released “Full Year 2007 Global Messaging Report,” written by InfoTech, a division of the Telecom Intelligence Group, bolsters previous forecasts by saying North American growth decreased 14 percent, while AsiaPac showed the strongest growth. Following closely behind is EMEA, with Caribbean Latin America coming in at a distant third.

Global manufacturer revenues increased 18 percent, mainly due to an accelerated shift toward unified messaging (UM). Sales of UM mailboxes increased across all regions, resulting in a global “take rate” increase of 10 percentage points.  InfoTech’s annual global forecast shows messaging mailbox shipments reaching more than 30 million annually by 2012, with UM mailboxes comprising 65 percent of the total and global messaging revenue growing at a CAGR of 8.4 percent. Avaya continued to lead all equipment makers globally in both shipments and revenues. Nortel ranked Number Two in shipments, and Cisco was second in revenues.

“The results showed that this market does not move in a steady upward fashion and certainly not by region,” comments report author Ken Dolsky. “Promotions, end-of-life announcements, new bundled offers and regional growth hot spots make this a dynamic market, affecting not only growth but manufacturers’ rankings.”

The “Full Year 2007 Global Messaging Report” also details why:

  • Voice mail is becoming a commodity
  • UM/unified communications is reducing port usage and driving costs down for messaging manufacturers
  • Messaging-system counts and ports are becoming less meaningful
